First Fruits

“Honor the Lord with your wealth And with the first fruits of all your crops (income);”
Proverbs 3:9

First Fruit is a term used in the Bible to describe the first fruit of the first harvest. God commanded His people to present the first fruit of the land to the Levitical priesthood (Deuteronomy 26:2).  He also required the first male born of the womb, whether human or livestock, to be dedicated to Him.

The first fruits offering was an offering required by God of the Israelites. The Hebrew word for First Fruit is “bikkurim” which means “promise to come.” By giving God the first fruits, Israel acknowledged that all good things come from God and that everything belongs to God. Giving the first fruits was also a way of expressing trust in God's provision; just as He provided the first fruits, so He would provide the rest of the crops that were needed.

Tithe means tenth. It is the first 10% of our income that we give to the Lord. If a person makes $100, then their tithe would be $10.

The first fruits is an offering additional to your tithe.  The first fruit itself may vary:
  • First paycheck of the year
  • First portion earned Bi-weekly, Daily, Month or Weekly
  • Portion earned from the sale of something
  • Portion earned from a payment of a provided service
