Season of Advent

The Advent wreath is a Christian tradition that symbolizes the passage of the four weeks of Advent. It is a circular candle holder that typically holds five candles. During the season of Advent, one candle on the wreath is lit each Sunday until all of the candles, including the fifth candle, are lit on Christmas Day. Each Sunday a candle is lite, scripture is read, a devotional may be given, and prayer is offered.

Each candle represents an aspect of the spiritual preparation for the celebration of the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Most Advent wreaths use three colors of candles – purple, pink, and white.

1st Candle - the Prophet’s Candle (purple) symbolizes “Hope”. Our Hope comes from God. It reminds us that Jesus is coming. We have hope because God is faithful and will keep the promises made to us.
Verse: Romans 15:12-13

2nd Candle - the Bethlehem candle (purple) symbolizes “Peace” It also means Preparation to “get ready”. Help us to be ready to welcome YOU, O GOD!
Verse: Luke 3:4-6

3rd Candle - the Shepherd’s Candle (pink) symbolizes “Joy”. The Angles sang a message of Joy. It reminds us about The Joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus.
Verse: Luke 2:7-15

4th Candle - the Angel Candle (purple) symbolizes “Love”. God sent his only Son to earth to save us because he loves us! Verse: John 3:16-17

5th Candle - “Christ Candle” (white) on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day the central white ”Christ Candle” is lighted. The white candle reminds us that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God, sent to wash away our sins! His birth was for his death, his death was for our birth!
Verse: John 1:29
